7Shield

Project overview

Resilience Guard GmbH is proud to participate in the H2020 7SHIELD consortium. In addition to the challenging task of building and launching a satellite, the success of an earth observation mission relies on being able to operate the satellite from the ground and ensure the integrity and availability of data gathered.

Resilience Guard is working with partner organisations to defend all the independent 'ground segments' that together form the Copernicus ground segment from cyber and physical threats. Specifically, we will lead activities to identify potential risks and vulnerabilities and develop plans to ensure service continuity of critical systems in the event of an attack.
Funding

The 7SHIELD project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 Research & Innovation programme under Grant Agreement No 883284.

Project description

The 24-month 7SHIELD project, 'Safety and Security Standards of Space Systems, ground Segments and Satellite data assets, via prevention, detection, response and mitigation of physical and cyber threats' (start date 1 September 2020) aims to provide a holistic framework to confront complex threats by covering all the macro stages of crisis management, namely pre-crisis, crisis and post-crisis phases. The project addresses the security and resilience of EU Ground Segments of Space Systems.

The anticipated outcome is an integrated, yet flexible and adaptable, framework enabling the deployment of innovative services for cyber-physical protection of ground segments, such as e-fences, passive radars, laser technologies and multimedia AI technologies including CCTV cameras and UAVs, that will:

· enhance their protection capabilities.

· integrate or interoperate with existing protection solutions already deployed at their installations, EU, national and other systems.

The framework will be open and will integrate advanced state-of-the-art technologies for data integration, processing, and analytics, machine learning and recommendation systems, data visualisation and dashboards, data security, cyber threat protection and cyberattack detection. The technological solution will be co-designed with first responder teams and is anticipated to contribute to policymaking, standardisation and new guidelines for contingency planning.

Project goals

The 7SHIELD project targets the following innovation (IO), user-oriented (UO) and impact-making (IMO) objectives:

IO1. Prevention technologies for physical and cyber threats.

IO2. Detection technologies for physical and cyber threats.

IO3. Response technologies for physical and cyber threats.

IO4. Mitigation technologies for physical and cyber threats (including novel installation designs).

IO5. 7SHIELD platform development.

UO1. Use case definition and requirements.

UO2. Pilot design, implementation and evaluation.

IMO1. Dissemination and collaboration.

IMO2. Exploitation and sustainability model.

IMO3. Standardisation, strategy and policy-making.

7SHIELD integrates a series of cutting-edge technological achievements from multidisciplinary fields, namely sensor technology, IoT, semantic reasoning, high-level analytics, decision support systems, crisis management and situational awareness focusing on the protection of critical infrastructures, such as ground segments of space systems. Practitioners from the security sector, first responders and utility providers will be enabled to employ the 7SHIELD's Early Warning and Decision Support System, which will also be capable of monitoring hazardous circumstances.

7SHIELD will be deployed and tested across several locations including Finland, Greece, Spain, Italy, and Belgium. This prolonged piloting and demonstration process will allow us to test and refine the deployed approach, including the effectiveness of the innovative technologies, the robustness of the 7SHIELD platform and its modules, to ensure the interoperability of 7SHIELD across all ground segments and, finally, to standardise the processes.

Our input
Resilience Guard GmbH will participate in several project activities. Among others, it will lead the actions related to the development of service continuity scenarios for cyber and/or physical attacks. Those activities aim to identify the potential risks and vulnerability already in place following risk assessments and vulnerability analysis performed at earlier project stages. Then, based on the risks and threats agreed, Resilience Guard GmbH will draft the appropriate plans dealing with the incident/emergency response phase, should a risk materialise and impact a system's critical operations.

Resilience Guard GmbH will use the project's outcomes to further promote resilience on a national and international level to international and national clients within Switzerland and beyond.
